This Mother’s Day, 84% of U.S. adults will be celebrating their moms or another influential mother figure. While a home-made card is always cherished and appreciated, consumers are expected to spend more than ever to celebrate mom $31.7 billion, up over $3.6 billion over 2021’s record spending.   • On average, consumers are planning to spend $25 more on gifts than last year, an average of $245.76 for gifts and outings.
  • While greeting cards and flowers are always among the top gifts, jewelry remains a timeless gift selection. Forty-one percent of consumers are planning to gift mom jewelry items this year.
  • Experiential gifts are also up this year. Items such as tickets to concerts, plays, or sporting events will be given by 27% of shoppers. This is up from 23% last year and are being gifted at the highest level since tracking began in 2016.
  • Last year, when outings and gatherings were difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers spent on electronics housewares, gardening tools, and books.
  • More than just a gift, shoppers want to give mom something meaningful. Among those surveyed, 46% said that finding a gift that is unique or different is a top priority, followed by 41% who aim to create a special memory.
  • Digital ads will pay off this year. More than a third of consumers are planning to make their gift purchases online. The remaining two-thirds will be making purchases at department stores and small local businesses.
  • Get those Mother’s Day gift lists ready! One-third of consumers say they look to retailers for “giftspiration.” Drive conversions with targeted emails and social content to audiences seeking gift ideas.
  • It’s not just moms that are being celebrated, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, friends, and godmothers are all among those acknowledged on Mother’s Day.
  • What do moms really want? According to a YouGov poll, mom's wish list includes a card, flowers, a special experience with her family, a keepsake gift, and chocolate. Other top items are more practical including, “having the day to myself” or “having someone other than me tackle household chores.”
  • Why is spending increasing? NRF’s President and CEO Matthew Shay says: “Consumers are eager to find memorable ways to honor their mothers and other important women in their lives and are willing to spend a little extra on this sentimental holiday.”
